In November look for duo appearances by Jarczyk as well as Charles Ellison, Dorothee Berryman, Kevin Dean, Janis Steprans, Daniel Lessard, Josh Rager and Steve Amirault. Both the Dizzy Gillespie–Charlie Parker 1945 Town Hall Concert and the 1957 Thelonious Monk–John Coltrane Carnegie Hall Concert CDs mentioned in the last column are now in release and should be in every serious jazz fans collection. When he started drumming, he discovered legends like Elvin Jones, Art Blakey, Miles Davis, and John Coltrane. In addition to leading his own group, Brian Blade & The Fellowship Band, he has achieved success working with David Binney, Kenny Garrett, Chick Corea, Wayne Shorter, John Patitucci, Norah Jones, Joshua Redman, and Bob Dylan. Brian Blade is a master of sound and texture – he is often seen using a variety of different sticks, brushes, and mallets. Originally from Regina, Dave is one of Montreal’s finest contemporary jazz soloists. He received his Bachelors and Masters degrees from McGill University, both in Jazz Trumpet. He has performed with Oliver Jones, Ranee Lee, Karen Young, Christine Jensen, and the Joe Sullivan big band, to name a few.
In the past fifteen years he has recorded, toured, and performed with such national and international stars as Jimmy Heath, Junior Cook, Ed Bickert, Denzal Sinclaire, Ben Monder, and Ranee Lee. Some of his early influences were Elvin Jones, Buddy Rich, Tony Williams, and Rick Marotta. Steve Gadd has appeared on hundreds of albums throughout his career. Some of his most famous grooves appear on songs like “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover” and “Late in the Evening” by Paul Simon. Some other artists he has recorded with include Chick Corea, Weather Report, Steve Khan, Paul McCartney, Frank Sinatra, Jaco Pastorius, and Steely Dan.
Kacio/Queen PhotosRoger Taylor yeglive.ca was the drummer for the rock band Queen. When he was young, his greatest influences were Mitch Mitchell, Keith Moon, and John Bonham. Taylor’s drumming style was a key contributor to Queen’s overall sound.
Perdido captures the one of a kind swing scatting of Sarah Vaughan. Pearl Bailey’s ability to mix stand up comedy with a song is recalled with “What Happened to the Hair on the Head of the Man I Love?”. “Yesterday When I Was Young” often a paean to regretful sentimentality for past sins of omission and commission, in Lee’s hands is “in your face I did it my way” pride. A telling coda to an album saying “thanks” to those she listened to over the years as she went down her own road. After listening to this album one wishes that Ranee Lee’s one woman show were playing down the street. It’s been a rather amazing journey for Ranee Lee, who for several decades has reigned virtually unchallenged as the Queen of Canada’s jazz divas. Ms. Lee recently won the coveted Juno Award for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year (beating out Diana Krall, Emilie-Claire Barlow and Carol Welsman) for Lives Upstairs, her new release for Justin Time, Canada’s leading jazz label. “That recognition really does give you the seal of approval,” says Ranee, who has recorded many albums for the Montreal label.
Louis Strut” can be heard on drummer Joe Charles’ CD, ‘Buck Naked” on the Vid Music label. Bass Player Paul Johnston moved to Montreal from Ottawa in 1990 to study jazz bass at McGill University. Before completing his studies he began working at clubs and festivals as well as on radio and television in Montreal, Toronto, Quebec, Ottawa, Kingston. He was a founding member of the jazz group Panache, with whom he won a Jazz Report award for jazz vocal group of the year in 1996. While remaining on the jazz scene as a bass player, he has branched out as a producer/engineer. Lorraine has a bachelor in vocal performance that has led her to perform all across Canada in many different styles of music from classical, to french text song to contemporary 20th century music. After studying jazz vocal technique privately with Ranee Lee she has performed solely in the jazz idiom. It is well suited to her passionate voice and unique and varied compositions.

Our visit was during pandemic and all museums were closed. Stay in so beautiful and historical building made this travel very special and joyful. We spend at least 2 hours exploring the art gallery and historical Artifacts in Chateau. and a location perfect for visiting the city and museum. Council backed the horse track as the only location for a casino and a furious Melnyk bemoaned having to come up with another plan.

We had a problem with our booking (1 queen bed instead of 2 doubles – not the hotels fault) and they were unable to offer us a cot. To be fair, it was Canada day and the hotel was full. The hotel is dated and the floor of the second room was stained and needed to be cleaned.
Yes, you can enjoy your lunch or dinner at Graffiti’s, the 3 Brewers and Milestones that lie about 100 metres from the hotel. There is a saloon bar that offers a variety of coffee and tea. I would thoroughly recommend this Holiday Inn. If I was going to be “picky”, I’d suggest widening the lines in the parking lot – very, tight for a pickup, and a squeeze for a car.
