League of Young Female Leaders
THE LEAGUE is a non-profit, non-governmental organization led by young women for the main purpose of advancing the status of girls and women in Ghana through mentorship, literacy development and advocacy. The organization approaches development through empowerment, participation and inclusion by engaging the grassroots. The LEAGUE envisages a well-balanced society of men and women working together to advance development. The organization provides a platform to discover and nurture the next generation of female leaders in diverse fields through its mentorship module and this has opened doors of opportunity to some of its fellows both locally and internationally. Our fellows exiting senior high go through a year-long training in leadership, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, sexual reproductive health and rights and wellness. Each fellow is attached to an accomplished woman to mentor her throughout the one year period. The literacy development module of the organization offers beneficiaries in high schools safe spaces in which to explore their reading, writing, speaking, creative minds and listening lives. Beneficiaries are also equipped with appropriate sexuality education and healthy lifestyles while benefiting from the provision of sanitary materials. These safe spaces are girls’ clubs that cultivate strong, self-confident, hopeful community leaders who believe in the power of story and the importance of empowered girls to change the world. The organization’s current advocacy focuses on child marriage and other forms of gender based violence. Both traditional and social media are used to create awareness on such issues and communities are engaged as a call to action to prioritize girls’ education and advancement.
